September 14th - The Exaltation of the Cross

Today we celebrate the feast day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. It is always celebrated on September 14th, and because it falls on a Sunday, we celebrate the feast day on a Sunday. You'll notice the priest (and deacon) will wear red today because it is a reminder of Christ's ultimate sacrifice on the cross for the salvation of the world. 

We hear in our Gospel this weekend the very famous passage from the 3rd Chapter of John's Gospel: 

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life." (John 3:16) 

You might recognize this passage because of the frequency it is brought up at sporting events, especially over the last 2 decades. People have held up signs with the words "John 3:16" as a way to share their faith in the midst of a secular world.
